3D Printed Signs

A 3D printed sign comes off the printer with its lettering, logo and background already in their colours. There is no painting, no vinyl and no masking: white letters on a navy plate, a two-colour logo on a matte black base, or a silk gold name on a white desk plaque are all printed in one go, with up to 8 colours in a single sign.

Upload your sign for an instant price

Upload a 3MF file with the colours set and the quote gives you a price straight away. You pick the filament for each colour, and the price updates as you go. Prices include GST, and shipping is a flat $15 per order anywhere in Australia, free on orders of $80 or more.

Signs people print

  • Business and reception signs. A logo and business name for the front counter, a shop window or a trade show table.
  • Door and room signs. Office names, “Staff only”, meeting room names and bathroom signs, printed as a matching set.
  • Desk name plates. A name and title on a small stand, in your brand colours.
  • Logo signs and displays. A raised logo in its real colours, for an office wall, a stand or a product shelf.
  • Name signs for home. Kids’ bedroom doors, house names for inside the front door, and pet name plaques. They make good personalised gifts.
  • Market stall and event signs. Small signs, price holders and table labels that match each other.
  • Shelf and storage labels. Workshop drawers, pantry jars and parts bins, labelled in raised text that does not peel off.

Why a printed sign looks different

Because the lettering is part of the print, it is raised or inlaid rather than stuck on. Edges stay crisp, the colours go all the way through, and there is nothing to lift at the corners. Matte PLA gives a flat, modern finish that hides the fine lines of 3D printing well, and silk PLA gives lettering a metallic sheen. You can mix them in one sign, for example matte white letters on a silk blue plate.

Getting your file ready

The quote reads the colours from your file, so the sign needs its colours set before you upload it:

  • In Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer, give each colour area its own part and filament, or paint the faces, then save the project as a 3MF.
  • In PrusaSlicer, assign each part to an extruder or use the multi-material painting tool, then save the project.

Our guide to setting up a multicolour 3MF walks through each program. If your sign is already designed as separate files, one per colour, you can combine them there too.

Keep lettering thick enough to print. Strokes narrower than about 1 mm are hard to print cleanly in any colour. Bold fonts and letters around 8 mm tall or more read best.

Put the colours in layers where you can. A sign with raised letters on a flat plate only changes colour once, where the letters start, so it prints faster and costs less than a design where the colours change on every layer.

Size and material

Multicolour signs can be up to 400 x 400 x 450 mm. For a larger sign, split it into tiles that join together.

All multicolour signs are printed in PLA, in standard, matte and silk colours. PLA is stiff and holds its shape well indoors. It softens in strong heat, so it is not the right material for a sign that sits in full sun outdoors or on a car dashboard.

How signs are priced

The price is the filament for each colour at its normal rate, including the small amount purged each time the printer changes colour, plus $4 an hour of print time. Both come from slicing your actual file, so the price you see is the price you pay. See multicolour 3D printing for the full details.

Need several copies, such as door signs for a whole office? Set the quantity in the quote. For large runs, see bulk quoting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an instant price for a 3D printed sign?

Yes. Upload a 3MF file with the colours set, as saved from Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer, and the quote shows a multicolour price straight away.

How many colours can a sign have?

Up to 8 colours in one print, chosen from our standard, matte and silk PLA.

Yes, if you have the logo as a 3D file with its colours set. The quote prices whatever is in the file. If you only have a flat logo image, it first needs to be turned into a 3D design.

How big can a 3D printed sign be?

Multicolour signs can be up to 400 x 400 x 450 mm. Larger signs can be printed as tiles that join together.

Are 3D printed signs suitable for outdoors?

PLA is best indoors. It softens in strong heat, so a sign in full Australian sun or behind a car windscreen can warp.

Do you ship signs Australia-wide?

Yes. Shipping is a flat $15 per order anywhere in Australia, free on orders of $80 or more. We do not ship outside Australia.
