Matte PLA prints with a flat, low-sheen surface instead of the slight gloss of standard PLA. Because light does not bounce off each printed line, layer lines are much less obvious, and a part looks more like a finished product than a 3D print. It is a good choice for prototypes, product mock-ups and anything that will be photographed or shown to a client.

Why choose a matte finish
Every FDM print is built from thin layers, and on a glossy surface each layer edge reflects a little light. That is what makes layer lines stand out. A matte surface scatters light instead, so:
- Layer lines are less visible, particularly on flat sides and gentle curves.
- Colours look even and solid, without shiny highlights.
- Parts photograph well, because there are no hot spots of reflected light.
- Fingerprints and small marks show less than on a glossy surface.
Matte PLA does not remove layer lines, it makes them less noticeable. For the smoothest possible surface on a small, detailed part, resin printing is the better option. Our layer height guide explains what else affects how visible layers are.
What matte PLA is good for
- Visual prototypes and product mock-ups that need to look close to a moulded product. See prototypes and functional parts.
- Enclosures, housings and covers for electronics and devices.
- Architectural and scale models, where a flat finish reads as a clean surface.
- Display pieces and figures that will not be painted.
- Trade show models and marketing samples.
Matte PLA prints on the same FDM printers as our standard PLA, with the same build size of up to 400 x 400 x 450 mm and the same infill choices from 0% to 100%. It suits the same kinds of indoor parts, with the same limits: PLA can soften in heat, such as in a hot car.
Matte PLA colours
You can order matte PLA in:
- Black
- White
- Green
- Red
Colours on screen are only a guide. If you need a colour we do not list in matte, standard PLA comes in more colours, and silk PLA offers a shiny alternative. Email quotes@3dprinting.zone if you are not sure.
What matte PLA costs
Matte PLA is priced at the same rate per gram as standard PLA, so you do not pay extra for the finish. As with all our PLA, the price is mostly based on the weight of plastic actually printed, which depends on the size of the part and the infill, plus a small charge for the part’s volume. The minimum price is $1 per part.
For a visual model, the default 20% infill is usually enough. For a working part, raise it; our infill percentage guide shows how that changes the price with real examples.
Prices include GST, and shipping is a flat $15 per order anywhere in Australia, free on orders of $80 or more. See our 3D printing materials guide to compare matte with the other materials, or our online 3D printing service for how ordering works.
Frequently asked questions
Does matte PLA hide layer lines completely?
No, but it makes them much less noticeable than glossy or silk PLA, because the surface does not reflect light off each layer.
Does matte PLA cost more than standard PLA?
No. It is charged at the same rate per gram as standard PLA, so there is no premium for the finish. Upload your model and switch materials in the quote to compare the exact prices.
Is matte PLA as strong as standard PLA?
It is still PLA and suits the same indoor uses. For parts that take a load, raise the infill; 40% or more is a sensible start.
Can I paint matte PLA?
Yes. A matte surface gives primer something to grip, and our guide to post-processing 3D prints covers sanding and painting.
Which matte colour is best for a prototype?
Black and white both read as a finished product. White shows the shape and edges of a design clearly; black hides small surface marks best.
