Custom 3D Printed Figurines

A figurine printed in colour comes off the printer looking finished: a character in its outfit, a pet in a hoodie, a mascot in team colours. There is no priming or painting. Each part of the figure is printed in its own colour of filament.

Figurines people print

  • Characters and mascots. Cartoon characters, game characters and club or school mascots, with their clothes, faces and details in separate colours.
  • Pet figures. A dog, cat or bird model in its real colours, or dressed up in a hoodie or a hat. They make good personalised gifts.
  • Desk figures and collectables. Small figures for a desk, a shelf or a display cabinet.
  • Cake toppers and party figures. A figure on a base with a name and age. See the note on food in personalised gifts.
  • Popular models from MakerWorld and Printables. Many of the best-loved colour figures are free to download and ready to print. See printing MakerWorld and Printables models.

Colour figures versus painted figures

Multicolour printing gives each area of a figure one solid colour, with clean edges between colours, like a cartoon or a toy. It suits most characters, mascots and stylised animals well.

It does not do shading, skin-tone gradients or fine painted detail like eyelashes. For a realistic figure, the usual approach is to print it in white or grey and paint it. Our guide to sanding, priming and painting 3D prints covers how. For very small, highly detailed figures, such as tabletop miniatures, resin printing gives finer detail in a single colour.

Ordering several of the same figure

Copies of the same figure print together on one plate, up to as many as fit. They share the colour changes, which take up much of a colour figure’s print time. So the second and third copies cost far less than the first. Set the quantity on the quote and the price per figure drops as you add copies. For larger runs, see bulk quoting.

Getting a figure ready to print

  • Give each colour its own part, or paint it. In Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer, assign a filament to each part, or paint the colours onto the model, then save the project as a 3MF. Our multicolour 3MF guide walks through it.
  • Give it a flat base. Figures stand up better, and print more reliably, on a flat base or stand.
  • Avoid very thin parts. Fingers, tails and antennae thinner than about 2 mm can snap. Thicken them where you can.
  • Fewer colour changes cost less. A figure changes colour on almost every layer, which adds print time. Two colours that are close together, such as two greys, can often be printed as one to save time and money.

Colours and finishes

Figures are printed in PLA. Choose from our standard PLA colours, including skin-friendly browns, pinks and yellows, plus matte for a soft, flat look and silk for metallic details like gold buttons or silver armour.

How figurines are priced

The price is the filament for each colour at its normal rate, including the small amount purged at each colour change, plus $4 an hour of print time. Both are worked out by slicing your file. See how much multicolour 3D printing costs for what makes a colour print cost more or less.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an instant price for a 3D printed figurine?

Yes. Upload a 3MF file with the colours set and the quote shows a multicolour price straight away. STL files have no colour, so they are priced in a single colour.

How many colours can a figurine have?

Up to 8 colours in one print.

Do I need to paint the figure?

No. Each part prints in the colour you choose. You only need paint for shading, gradients or very fine detail.

Is it cheaper to order more than one?

Yes. Copies of the same figure print together and share the colour changes, so each extra copy costs much less than the first.

Can you make a figure of my pet from a photo?

We print from 3D files, so you need a 3D model of your pet first. Many designers on sites like Etsy and Fiverr make custom pet models, and once you have the file you can upload it here for a price.

Do you ship figurines Australia-wide?

Yes. Shipping is a flat $15 per order anywhere in Australia, free on orders of $80 or more.
